Workers at the Portharcourt Electric Distribution company in
Yenagoa were attacked by a mob of angry youths yesterday. With just a
few of them escaping being lynched. But the business service manager
was cut with a matchet and left to bleed, another was pushed from a
ladder while doing some disconnections.
It was reported that the youths were angry that even with the
blackout experienced in the area for days consecutively, the company
had been harrassing them with security operatives. Requesting for
service payment.
The Chief Operating officer PHED Engineer Kingsley Achife confirmed
the attack on the workers and added security operatives attached to
the staff were attacked.
Engineer Achife also appealed to the public and youths to stop
attacking and harrassing staff of the company. It was reported that
the Efie community, where the company's branch was attacked was oweing
a debt of about N60million in arears and N2million on the current
bill.
The attack is the second in a week, a few days before, a
disconnection team in another part of the state capital was beaten up
thoroughly. In another place, a PHED vehicle was destroyed.
